1. Bordeaux
Stay
About the destination: Bordeaux is an exhilarating and sprawling city where wine still flows and churches still stand. Attractive shopping arcades and handsome 18th century riverfront facades decorate its streets. This city is a paradise for wine lovers and it’s a perfect choice for a romantic gateway. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the Cathédrale St-André is the wide variety of flying buttresses that encircle it. To the right of the main portico is a 16th century buttress composed off a string of slender columns. Adjacent to the Church of St-Michel is the equally beautiful, free-standing bell tower, an imposing and hollow shell. If you ever wondered what Flamboyant Gothic was all about, these edifices provide an unsurpassed definition of that style. Also not to be missed is Bordeaux’s Romanesque representative, the Church of Ste-Croix, with its richly ornamented façade. And of course you cannot leave Bordeaux without visiting the Maison du Vin that offers free tastings of regional wines. The city is also within striking distance of the sublime, immensely enjoyable Dune du Pilat, a gargantuan mountain of silken sand that seems to bring out the acrobat in everyone.

2. Arcachon
Stay
About the destination: Arcachon is a commune in the Gironde department in southwestern France. It is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 km southwest of Bordeaux in the Landes forest. It has a fine beach and a mild climate said to be favorable for invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints. The town of Arcachon is only 150 years old. Arcachon is known for the "Arcachonnaise", the local name for an Arcachon villa, which is the architectural style of many of the older houses built there. It is a type of Victorian architecture, and was criticized for generations, but is now considered to be charming and deeply human. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Dune of Pilat The Dune of Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe. It is located in La Teste-de-Buch in the Arcachon Bay area. The dune has a volume of about 60,000,000 m³, measuring around 500 m wide from east to west and 2.7 km in length from north to south. Its height is currently 110 meters above sea level. The dune is a famous tourist destination with more than one million visitors per year. Arcachon Bay Arcachon Bay (in French, the Bassin d'Arcachon, and known locally simply as "le Bassin") is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest coast of France, situated between the Côte d'Argent and the Côte des Landes, in the region of Aquitaine. Arcachon Bay has an amazing climate, with perfect sunshine pretty much all year round. The Winter cold is relatively mild while Summer is dry and hot, so it’s ideal for enjoying the sublime beaches on Arcachon Bay. Furthermore, the Architecture of Arcachon is some of the most beautiful in Gironde, mainly due to the side range of architectural styles in the region. Town center of Arcachon The town centre has markets and vibrant atmosphere, and the 'wintertown' (the "ville d'hiver") with its extensive number of grand villas built in the 1860's, and the most complete 'belle epoque' town you will find anywhere in France. The town is broadly divided into five parts: •the summer town (Ville d'été), along the northern coast and the most developed part of Arcachon, next to the beach and with a good array of restaurants, bars and shops: see Ville d' Eté guide. •the autumn town (Ville d'Automne), to the east and around the marina and port areas of the town, including Aiguillon: see Ville d'Automne guide. •the winter town (Ville d'Hiver), south of the summer town and the region to see hundreds of imposing villas from the end of the 19th century: see Ville d'Hiver guide. •the spring town (Ville de Printemps), the western part of Arcachon and closest to the lovely beaches such as Pereire to the west of the town centre. •the separate resort of Le Moulleau, to the south-west of Arcachon - see Le Moulleau resort.
